Chapter 10

Melissa watched Lawton as he bent to pull off her boots. Returning to her side, he caught her hands and pulled her upright. Then, he eased her heavy denim shirt off, pulling it free of first one arm and then the other. He tossed it atop her boots. Beneath the shirt, she wore only a cotton knit camisole, a feminine version of a man’s athletic shirt. Damp with perspiration, the pale peach fabric, sweetened with lace at the armholes and neckline, clung like a second skin.

When he released her, Melissa lay back, feeling as if she were sinking through the bed. Lawton hesitated a moment, looking at her, his eyes afire with a need so intense she nearly stopped breathing. Weighted with delicious lassitude, she could not move, but in answer to the silent demand of his eyes, her whole body seemed to glow. She watched while he kicked off his own boots, peeled out of his shirt and returned to lie beside her. Turning to face her, he gathered her into his arms.

She wriggled, pressing the full length of her body as close to his as she could. Even that was not close enough. Too many barriers still separated them.

As if he sensed her desire, Lawton released her and drew back. With unsteady hands, he lifted her to a sitting position, tugged the camisole free of her jeans and pushed it up until he could directly touch her damp and heated skin.

His work-toughened hands rasped slightly as he slid them gently over her body. Their touch, like the sound of his voice, was just rough enough to stir her senses. He stroked her back, her ribs, finally moving upward to cup her breasts. Already erect at the promise in his eyes, her nipples hardened under his hands, seemed to reach of their own volition for the exquisite torment of his touch.

Moving together, they lay down once more, coming to rest side-by-side, face-to-face. His lips moved over her face, her throat, finding every secret and hitherto unknown spot that had slept, awaiting the quickening force of his caress. His moustache tickled delicately, barely less soft than his hair. Clasping her hands behind his head, she wove her fingers into the silver-brown strands. Despite the metallic color, it was softer than thistle down.

Finally, Lawton raised himself on one elbow and lifted her, just enough to slip the camisole over her head. As he tossed it aside, his mouth settled over hers once more. He took first her upper lip and then her lower between his, nipped and tugged gently, slid his tongue between her parted lips to sample their inner softness and then traced the even edges of her teeth. Timidly, at first, but with growing assurance, she reached with her tongue to meet his. At the first touch, a shudder rippled through him. When he pulled away to sit up, her eyes flew open with alarm. No, he wasn’t going to stop!

“I’m not going anywhere, Missy.” He smiled down at her in reassurance.
